Classic
Program
Odyssey fields Classic developmental teams for boys and girls at U10 and U11. Classic teams accept applicants until rosters are full: players do not try out for Odyssey teams until U12. Goals of the Classic program focus on individual player development. Players should become more comfortable with soccer balls at their feet, practice and employ new 1v1 dribbling and defensive moves, and learn to take risks and make decisions in the run of play. Coaches want players to try new things, accept mistakes, and have fun.
Expectations
Training begins early in December and lasts through June. Teams train twice weekly at the Stevens Avenue Armory in Portland, and players will also have access to optional weekly hour-long sessions each in foot skills, fitness and goal-keeping. Classic teams will compete in Odyssey’s Winter Freeze tournament and one other indoor tournament, and the Club’s coaching staff is currently investigating appropriate indoor league options for teams at all levels and hopes that every group can join a local indoor league. When Premier teams move outside in March (weather permitting), Classic teams have full use of the Armory and expand their schedules to incorporate fitness and foot skills into team training as extra sessions end at this time. In addition, there will be an option for players with other spring plans to step off their teams in mid-March. After that date, the Club will post Classic spring teams for Soccer Maine’s Pine Tree League and apply to two spring tournaments. Odyssey discourages overnight travel to tournaments for Classic teams.
Gear
Players buy a Nike kit that includes a jersey, tee shirt, shorts and socks. The cost is about $80. The following items are also required for training sessions at the armory:
